Innkeeper Apprentice Program

Have you ever fantasized about leaving cubicles and copiers behind for an idyllic life running a beachfront or countryside inn? Would you like to know more about the ins and outs of this business?
We offer a real life opportunity to investigate exactly what managing a Bed and Breakfast entails. By having first hand experience, you can make an intelligent decision whether an Inn or Bed and Breakfast is for you before you make a financial commitment to buy one.
We offer a three step program for the aspiring innkeeper. This program is designed to allow you to learn at a gradual pace without becoming overwhelmed. You get to come to the beautiful island of Kauai and have a hands-on experience of what it is like to be an innkeeper.
- The first step involves spending a few days working along with us so that you learn the basics. You then have the opportunity to inn-sit for a short period. Inn-sitters are, essentially, substitute innkeepers.
- If step one and inn-sitting worked well and you have the desire to learn more, we proceed to step two and from there to step three. Each step adds more components of the innkeeping process.
Working in a bed and breakfast as an apprentice can offer a reality view into the daily operations of an inn or B&B. It also provides you, the aspiring innkeeper, with a practical experience background.
Financial institutions question would-be innkeepers as to what they know about running a bed and breakfast, what research they have done and about the experience they have had. This apprenticeship program gives you credibility when putting together a business plan and asking for financial assistance. For the aspiring innkeeper, there is no better education for the business than learning from the inside out.

Who are we?
Terry and Lucy Ryan have been inn keepers at the Bamboo Jungle House here on Kauai since 2004. During that time we have built a highly successful business. Our devotion to guest service has been paramount and it has paid off.
Terry is our expert in residence. He ran a full service Country Inn in Vermont in the 1970’s. Following that he worked in the hotel industry for many years before starting his own consultant business for Country Inns and large Bed and Breakfasts.
